About Dasymutilla magnifica Mickel

Dasymutilla magnifica, commonly called the magnificent velvet ant, is a species of velvet ant. It occurs in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts, the Arizona mountains, and the Great Basin region of North America. Identifying this species in the field is challenging, because it is very similar in size and color to Dasymutilla klugii, a related species that shares a partially overlapping range with it.
