About Dasylophia anguina J.E.Smith, 1797
The black-spotted prominent (Dasylophia anguina J.E.Smith, 1797) has a wingspan ranging from 3 to 4.1 cm (1.2 to 1.6 inches). This species is sexually dimorphic: males have black streaks in the basal and median areas of the forewing, and white hindwings; females have a large yellow-brown patch in the basal area of the forewing, and gray hindwings. For both sexes, the postmedian line on the forewing is sharp and rounded, and black spots are present in the lower marginal area of the forewing. This moth is distributed from Manitoba to southern Quebec, extending south to southern Florida and northeastern Texas. It can be found in habitats including fields, woodlands, and barrens.
