About Dascyllus trimaculatus (Rüppell, 1829)
Dascyllus trimaculatus, commonly known as the threespot dascyllus, gets its name because its grey to black body has two white spots on the sides and one between the eyes, similar to a domino. This species grows up to 13 cm (5.1 in) in length. Its coloration is somewhat variable: the spot on the forehead may be absent, and the lateral spots may be greatly reduced. It feeds on algae, copepods, and other planktonic crustaceans. Adults generally live in small groups around coral heads or large rocks. Juveniles are found in association with large sea anemones, or sheltering between the spines of diadema sea urchins, or among branching corals. This species occurs down to depths of 55 m (180 ft).
