This species was first described by Augustus Radcliffe Grote and Coleman Townsend Robinson in 1870. It is distributed across the eastern United States, with its range extending as far west and south as Kansas and Texas. Within the United States, Dargida rubripennis holds a threatened conservation status in the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut. The wingspan of adult moths of this species measures between 32 and 37 mm.
