This species reaches a maximum total length of 180 cm. It is found in northwestern Africa, specifically occurring in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Different sources have given differing type localities: Gray (1842) listed the type locality as "Algiers", while Schwarz (1936) listed it as "Algeria". In Algeria, this species is restricted to coastal regions. Coastal records of this species from Tunisia may actually correspond to M. deserti instead.
