About Cytisus nigricans L.

Cytisus nigricans, commonly known as black broom, is a species of flowering plant that belongs to the subfamily Faboideae of the legume family Fabaceae. This plant is a slender deciduous shrub that grows between 3 and 5 feet, which equals 0.91 to 1.52 meters, tall, and has erect branches. In summer and early autumn, masses of bright yellow, lightly fragrant pea-shaped flowers bloom in long racemes on the growth that the plant produced in the current year. The more compact cultivar 'Cyni' reaches only 1 meter, or 3.3 feet, tall, and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This species is hardy, but it grows best in a sheltered location with full sun and poor soil. It is recommended to remove mature seed pods from the plant in autumn.
