About Cystopteris montana (Lam.) Bernh.
Cystopteris montana (Lam.) Bernh., previously classified as Athyrium montanum, is a species of fern commonly called mountain bladderfern. It can be found across high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, including Eurasia, Greenland, Alaska, and most of Canada. It also grows at higher elevations in Colorado, further south in North America. This fern grows a creeping, cordlike, scaly stem. Its leaves reach up to 45 centimeters long. Leaf blades grow on a petiole that has a dark base and a light-colored upper end, and the petiole itself is longer than the blade. The blade is pentagonal, divided into leaflets that are further subdivided into many lobed, toothed segments. The fern’s sori are covered by hairy, whitish, cup-shaped indusia. Mountain bladderfern grows in moist mountain habitats, including forests located near streams.
