About Cyrtanthus elatus (Jacq.) Traub

Cyrtanthus elatus, commonly known as the Scarborough lily, is a bulbous flowering plant native to Cape Province, South Africa. Its other common names include fire lily and George lily. Cultivars of this species produce flowers in colors including bright red, orange, yellow, and occasionally pink or white. Stems can reach a height of 2 feet (0.61 meters). This species is relatively easy to grow when placed in a warm, sheltered, frost-free location. It can also be potted and grown under glass. It requires either full sun or light shade, and blooms in late summer or early autumn. The Latin specific epithet elatus translates to "tall". This plant has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, with confirmation of this award in 2017.
