About Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa (Stoll, 1813)

Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa, commonly known as the green tree locust, is a large species of grasshopper in the genus Cyrtacanthacris. This species is found in African grasslands, and it includes three recognized subspecies: C. a. aeruginosa, C. a. flavescens, and C. a. goldingi. All three subspecies share a single common ancestor. The species is univoltine, meaning it produces only one brood of offspring each year. Its eggs undergo diapause, a period of suspended or arrested growth. For overwintering, adult green tree locusts mate, after which females lay their eggs and die before the dry season begins. The eggs remain in diapause for 7 months, and have an incubation period of 45 to 67 days.
