About Cyperus squarrosus L.

Cyperus squarrosus is a small species of sedge. This plant grows to a maximum height between 10 and 16 centimeters (3.9 to 6.3 inches). Around the base of the stem, it produces one to three short, thin leaves. Its inflorescence forms a single spherical or clustered spike that can hold up to 30 spikelets. Each individual spikelet is flat and has excurved awns: the tip of each of the 2 to 8 flowers on the spikelet curls outward. The spikelets themselves range in color from bright green to yellowish or brown. This sedge’s small overall size and the characteristic curve of its awn tips are reliable identifying features for the species.
