About Cyperus javanicus Houtt.
Cyperus javanicus Houtt. is a rhizomatous, glaucous perennial sedge with a tufted growth habit. It usually grows to between 0.6 and 1.2 metres (2.0 to 3.9 ft) in height. This plant blooms between January and August, and produces brown flowers. Its culms are obtusely trigonous and densely papillose. Its leaves are long and flat on the upper surface, while folded at the base, and measure between 2 to 13 millimetres (0.08 to 0.51 in) in width. It has compound inflorescences with between six and twelve primary rays, that grow up to 8 centimetres (3.1 in) in length. In Western Australia, Cyperus javanicus Houtt. is found beside pools and along streams and rivers in the Kimberley region, where it grows in sandy-clay soils. The species is also native to the Northern Territory, north east Queensland, and the Cape York Peninsula of Australia. It is native to islands north of Australia as well, including Papua New Guinea, Timor, and Indonesia. The species has also been introduced to Hawaii and islands in the Pacific basin.
