About Cydia latiferreana (Walsingham, 1879)

Cydia latiferreana, commonly known as the filbertworm moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. It was previously classified, and is still sometimes separated, into the monotypic genus Melissopus. This species occurs across most of North America. It has a wingspan of approximately 18 millimeters. Adult moths are active between July and October, with activity timing varying by location. Its larvae, called filbertworms, feed on the acorns of Quercus alba (white oak), Quercus macrocarpa, Quercus rubra, and Quercus velutina. The larvae are most well-known for feeding on hazelnuts, which are the seeds of the genus Corylus, and act as a major pest of hazelnut orchards in the Pacific Northwest.
