About Cyclodes omma (van der Hoeven, 1840)
Scientific name: Cyclodes omma (van der Hoeven, 1840)
The wingspan of this species ranges from approximately 60 to 72 mm. The head, thorax, and abdomen are covered in pale reddish-brown and greyish hairs. The forewings are pale golden brown with green reflections. The outer area of the forewings is whitish, and the apical area is dusted with purplish scales. A metallic blue ring-shaped spot sits below the costa, and is enclosed by a double sinuous antemedial line. Indistinct sinuous medial, post-medial, and submarginal lines are present on the forewings. The medial line angles at the lower end of the cell, and the postmedial line is dentate from the costa to vein 3. A series of almost marginal dark striae are visible on the forewings. The hindwings are greyish fuscous, with a curved postmedial white band that bears a dark line. Some blue marks are visible towards the anal angle of the hindwings, with a whitish band located beyond these marks. The apical area of the hindwings is blackish, and a marginal whitish band, outlined by brown lines, is present. On the ventral side of the wings, there is an indistinct lunulate postmedial pale line and faint traces of a submarginal line; the area is blackish towards the costa of each wing. Recorded larvae of this species feed on coconut, and also consume other palm species. They bore deeply into young nuts, which causes premature nut shedding.
