About Cyanistes teneriffae (Lesson, 1831)

The African blue tit, scientifically named Cyanistes teneriffae (Lesson, 1831), measures 11–12 cm (4.3–4.7 in) in length. It is a small, compact tit with a sharp bill. For the nominate subspecies, the forehead and supercilium are white extending to the center of the nape, while the crown is deep glossy blue that darkens to blackish on the neck. This tit has a blue back and upper body, and a yellow underbelly. Its song consists of variable repetitions of one or two notes. The African blue tit favors temperate forests of both low and high elevation. On the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, the species prefers lowland areas, while populations on Tenerife and Gran Canaria favor montane forests.
