This species is native to the central United States, where it has been recorded in Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. It typically grows in low wet areas and moist prairies. As a parasite, it grows on a variety of herbaceous plants, and frequently parasitizes members of the Asteraceae family.
