About Cucullia lactucae (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
Scientific name: Cucullia lactucae (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775, also known by the taxonomic synonyms pustulata Ev. and campanulae H. Sch. nec Frr. Forewings are dark grey, with lines and shading that are even darker. The inner line, outer line, and a median shade extending from the costa are fairly distinct. A black streak runs from the base along the submedian fold; there is also a black streak above vein 4, and a shorter black streak below vein 2 just before the termen. Hindwings are brownish fuscous with a paler base, and this paler base is particularly noticeable in males. The larva is primarily white; it has a broad yellow dorsal line that expands into a blotch on each segment. A row of large round black spots runs along each side of this dorsal line, and between these spots, just before the segmental incisions, sits a row of oblong vertical black spots. Above the prolegs, there is a row of yellow spots that have black flecks marked on both sides. Its spiracles are black, and its black head bears a white angular marking. The wingspan of Cucullia lactucae ranges from 44 to 53 mm.
