About Ctenophorus isolepis (Fischer, 1881)

Adult central military dragons (scientific name Ctenophorus isolepis) range in color from yellowish to reddish-brown, with pale to dark blotches and flecks across their bodies. Full-grown individuals reach a total length of 21 to 26.5 cm (8.3 to 10.4 inches), including their tail. This species inhabits arid regions of central and western Australia, found in sand-ridge deserts and loamy flats that typically have spinifex ground cover. Central military dragons hide in this spinifex when they become alarmed. They live entirely above ground, generally avoid elevated and exposed sites, and prefer to forage on patches of bare ground between low vegetation. Their distribution extends through outback Western Australia, into the southern half of the Northern Territory, north-western South Australia, and south-western Queensland. Ctenophorus rubens was previously classified as a subspecies of the central military dragon.
