About Cryptostroma corticale (Ellis & Everh.) P.H.Greg. & S.Waller

Cryptostroma corticale (Ellis & Everh.) P.H.Greg. & S.Waller is a species of fungus. It causes sooty bark disease in maples, and particularly affects sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus). Spores of this fungus grow in large quantities under the bark of affected trees or stacked logs. The fungus causes disease and eventual death in host trees. Its allergenic spores can trigger a severe, debilitating form of pneumonitis, which is an inflammation of the lungs, in humans.
