About Crotalus polystictus (Cope, 1865)

This species, Crotalus polystictus, was first described by Cope in 1865. Most adult individuals reach a total length between 60 and 70 cm, which is equal to 24 to 28 inches. Exceptionally large specimens can grow up to 100 cm, or 39 inches, in total length. This rattlesnake is found on the plateau of central Mexico. Its range extends from southern Zacatecas and northeastern Colima, eastward to east-central Veracruz. It lives at elevations ranging from 1,450 m to 2,600 m (4,760 to 8,530 ft). The originally given type locality for this species is "Table Land, Mexico". In 1950, H.M. Smith and Taylor proposed restricting the type locality to "Tupátaro, Guanajuanto, Mexico".
