About Crocus thomasii Ten.

Crocus thomasii Ten. is a flowering plant species in the genus Crocus, which belongs to the Iridaceae plant family. This species is a cormous perennial, native to the region stretching from southern Italy to Croatia. In the 19th century, wild-harvested stigmas of Crocus thomasii were collected near Taranto, South Italy, and used as a wild saffron to add flavor to dishes. It is considered a possible ancestor of domesticated saffron crocus, Crocus sativus.
