About Crithagra hyposticta (Reichenow, 1904)

The southern citril, with the scientific name Crithagra hyposticta, is also known by the synonym Serinus hyposticus. It is a species of finch belonging to the finch family Fringillidae, and it is endemic to the eastern Afromontane region. This species was formerly classified within the genus Serinus. However, phylogenetic analysis conducted using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences revealed that the genus Serinus was polyphyletic. As a result of this finding, the genus was split, and the southern citril, along with many other species, was moved to the resurrected genus Crithagra.
