About Criorhina verbosa (Walker, 1849)

Criorhina verbosa (Walker, 1849), commonly called the hairy-cheeked bumble fly, is an uncommon species of syrphid fly. It has been observed in the eastern to central northeastern United States. Members of the hoverfly group, which this species belongs to, can stay nearly motionless while in flight. Adult Criorhina verbosa are also referred to as flower flies, because they are commonly found on flowers, where they obtain energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen. Larvae of the Criorhina genus are located in decaying wood. This species is distributed in Canada and the United States.
