Criorhina ranunculi is a large bumblebee-mimic hoverfly with a Palaearctic distribution across much of Europe and European Russia.

About Criorhina ranunculi (Panzer, 1803)

This is a large bumblebee mimic with a wing length of 11.25–14 mm. Its thorax and abdomen are covered in long, dense hairs. The thorax is covered with black hairs, while the basal part of the abdomen has black hairs, and the tip of the abdomen has red or yellowish hairs. Scutellar hairs can be pale yellow or brownish. The hind femora are considerably thickened, especially in males, and the hind tibiae are sickle-shaped. This species has a Palaearctic distribution. Its range extends from southern Norway and Sweden south to central Spain, and from Ireland eastwards through central Europe into the European part of Russia.
