About Cratoxylum cochinchinense (Lour.) Blume
Cratoxylum cochinchinense grows as a shrub or tree, usually reaching 10 to 15 metres (49 feet) in height, with a trunk diameter of up to 0.65 metres (2 feet 2 inches). Its brown bark ranges from smooth to flaky, and has distinctive lateral pegs that are leftover from old leaf clusters. The undersides of its leaves are glaucous. Its flowers are crimson red, and after blooming, they develop into seed capsules that grow up to 12 mm (0.5 inches) long. Cratoxylum cochinchinense is native to the Andaman Islands, Borneo, Cambodia, South-Central China, Southeast China, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Nicobar Islands, the Philippines, Sumatera, Thailand, and Vietnam. It grows in subtropical and tropical forests, including kerangas forests and peat swamps.
