About Crataegus chrysocarpa Ashe

Crataegus chrysocarpa Ashe is a hawthorn species native to most of continental United States and Canada. Its common names, fireberry hawthorn and goldenberry hawthorn, along with its scientific name, all reference the color of this plant's unripe fruit. Mature fruit of this species is red; the variety C. chrysocarpa var. vernonensis produces deep claret-colored fruit that turns nearly black when over-ripe. Three varieties of this species are currently recognized: C. chrysocarpa var. chrysocarpa, C. chrysocarpa var. piperi, and C. chrysocarpa var. vernonensis.
