About Cranioleuca sulphurifera (Burmeister, 1869)

The sulphur-bearded reedhaunter, with the scientific name Cranioleuca sulphurifera (Burmeister, 1869), measures 15 to 16 cm (5.9 to 6.3 in) in length and weighs 12 to 14 g (0.42 to 0.49 oz). Males and females have identical plumage. Adult birds have a buffish white supercilium on a otherwise whitish face streaked with gray. Their crown, back, rump, and uppertail coverts are olive-brown. Their tail feathers are distinctly pointed; the central pair of tail feathers are brownish and longer than the other tail feathers, which are more rufous in color. Their greater and median wing coverts are rufous, their primary coverts and secondaries are dark fuscous, and their primaries are rufous with rich tawny bases. Their chin and the center of their throat are yellow, their breast is whitish with thin grayish streaks, their belly is whitish, and their flanks and undertail coverts are tawny-buff. Their iris ranges from whitish red to orange-pink, their maxilla is blackish brown to black, their mandible is pinkish white to whitish, and their legs and feet are greenish gray to pale olive-green. Juveniles have darker upperparts and more ochraceous underparts than adults, with no yellow on the chin and no streaks on the breast.

The sulphur-bearded reedhaunter is distributed from far southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul south through Uruguay into eastern Argentina, reaching as far south as northern Río Negro Province, and its range passes south of far northeastern Misiones Province. It lives in freshwater marshes that have tall grasses or reeds, as well as adjacent scrublands. Its elevational range extends from near sea level up to 300 m (1,000 ft).
