About Cotylorhiza tuberculata (Macri, 1778)

Cotylorhiza tuberculata (Macri, 1778) can reach 40 cm (16 in) in bell diameter, though most individuals are usually less than 17 cm (6.7 in) wide. This jellyfish's sting has very little to no effect on humans, but it can trigger allergic reactions in more sensitive people. These allergic reactions typically cause itching and scratching at the stung area. As a cnidarian, this species has a smooth, elevated central dome that is surrounded by a gutter-shaped ring. Its marginal lappets are elongated and subrectangular. Each mouth arm splits into two near its base, then branches multiple more times. Along with some larger appendages, this jellyfish has many short, club-shaped appendages that end in disk-like tips.
