About Cotoneaster dammeri C.K.Schneid.
Cotoneaster dammeri C.K.Schneid. is a fast-growing evergreen low shrub with creeping branches. It grows to between 30 and 40 centimetres, or 12 to 16 inches, in height. Its leaves are elliptical, leathery, and have very fine tips and entire edges, with a length of around 8 to 20 millimetres (0.31 to 0.79 inches). The upper leaf surface is glossy and dark green, while the underside is gray-green, and leaves turn purple during autumn. This species produces fragrant flowers that typically grow singly or in clusters of 2 to 3 in leaf axils. The flowers are white with pink outer sides, with a diameter of around 4 to 5 millimetres (0.16 to 0.20 inches). They carry approximately twenty stamens with purple anthers, and flowering occurs from May through June. The fruits are bright red subglobose berries that measure about 6 to 7 millimetres (0.24 to 0.28 inches) in diameter, and they remain on the plant well into winter. Cotoneaster dammeri has a finely branched, very shallow root system, and its branches form new roots at nodes when they come into contact with the ground. This plant grows naturally in mountainous regions, specifically on cliff sides and in open, mixed forests on dry calcareous soils, at elevations ranging from 1,300 metres (4,300 ft) to 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) above sea level. It is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant, with known cultivars including Cotoneaster dammeri 'Radicans', Cotoneaster dammeri 'Skogholm', and Cotoneaster dammeri 'Royal beauty'.
