This species, Cosmorhoe ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758), has a wingspan ranging from 20 to 29 mm, with forewings measuring 13 to 15 mm in length. The ground colour of the forewings is creamy white to bright white. The forewing base and midfield are coloured black to blue-black; the midfield is crossed by two bright lines. A deep, jagged spot sits within the midfield band. Grey or black spots of varying intensity appear in the pale areas between the basal area and the midfield, as well as in the marginal field. The hindwings are whitish, with a small black spot in their center. Caterpillars of the species are brownish, with bright angled markings on their backs and bright stripes along their sides. The pupa is typically a shiny red-brown. This species is distributed across the Palearctic realm, including western Europe, the British Isles, Central Europe, Central Asia, Asia Minor, and Kyrgyzstan. In the Alps, it occurs at elevations up to 1500 meters. It can be found in a wide range of habitats, including heathland, deciduous and mixed forests, forest clearings, bushy areas, grasslands, fens, scrub, gardens, and park-like landscapes.
