About Cornus officinalis Siebold & Zucc.

Cornus officinalis Siebold & Zucc. is a large, vigorously growing deciduous shrub with rough, flaky bark. Umbels of acid yellow flowers emerge in early spring, before its oval leaves develop. Edible red berries form later in summer, and its leaves turn various shades of red before dropping in autumn. In cultivation, this plant is valued for adding year-round visual interest to gardens. It is a fairly large shrub, typically reaching 8 meters (26 feet) in both height and width. The cultivar 'Kintoki', which produces larger, more abundant flowers, has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
