About Cornus excelsa Kunth

Cornus excelsa Kunth is a tree that grows up to 12 meters tall, with a trunk reaching up to 15 centimeters in diameter. It occurs in the mountains of Mexico and northern Central America. Its distribution includes multiple regions in Mexico: the Sierra Madre Oriental, southern Sierra Madre Occidental, Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, Sierra Madre del Sur, Chiapas Highlands, and the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. The species also grows in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas in Guatemala, and in the Guatemalan Highlands that span Guatemala and Honduras. It is most commonly found in cloud forests, where it is a common early successional tree in secondary vegetation. It can also be found on ridges and slopes in montane oak forests and pine–oak forests. It grows at elevations between 1,500 and 2,800 meters. Its seedlings can be grown easily from seeds that have undergone chemical scarification.
