About Cornus disciflora Moc. & Sessé ex DC.
Cornus disciflora Moc. & Sessé ex DC. is a tree that ranges in size from small to large, growing 6 to 25 meters tall. It flowers from January to July, and again from September to December. It produces fruits in March and April, and from June to November. This species is distributed across the mountains of Mexico and Central America. Within this broad range, it occurs in the Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre Oriental, Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, Sierra Madre del Sur, and Chiapas Highlands of Mexico; the Sierra Madre de Chiapas spanning Mexico and Guatemala; the Chortis Highlands of El Salvador, Honduras, and northern Nicaragua; and the Cordillera de Talamanca of Costa Rica and western Panama. It typically grows in humid forests, which includes montane and premontane cloud forests and oak forests, as well as in wet areas of subhumid montane forests. It occurs at elevations between 1,000 and 2,900 meters. The fruits of this tree are an important food source for birds.
