Like other bark centipedes, Cormocephalus westwoodi prefers to live under rocks, bark, and leaf litter. This species is the largest centipede found in Tasmania, and can reach a maximum length of 60 millimeters. It is kept as a pet in Oceanian countries, and is often confused with the related species Cormocephalus aurantiipes.
