About Cordia decandra Hook. & Arn.

Cordia decandra Hook. & Arn. is a species of woody plant in the family Cordiaceae. It is commonly called carbón or carbonillo in Spanish. This native shrub grows in the southern parts of Chile’s Atacama Desert, most commonly on dry hills in the Atacama and Coquimbo Regions. There are no documented populations of this species growing south of latitude 30° S. It occurs at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1,500 meters above mean sea level. It produces small edible fruits that can be eaten dry or toasted.
