About Coracopsis nigra (Linnaeus, 1758)
The lesser vasa parrot, also called the black parrot, has the scientific name Coracopsis nigra. It is a black-colored parrot that is endemic to most of Madagascar. It is one of four recognized species of vasa parrots. The other three vasa parrot species are the greater vasa parrot (C. vasa), the Seychelles black parrot (C. barklyi), and the Comoros black parrot (C. sibilans). Both the Seychelles black parrot and Comoros black parrot were formerly classified as the same species as the lesser vasa parrot. Lesser vasa parrots live in Madagascar's mangrove swamps and evergreen forests. Their diet consists of seeds, blossoms, and fruit, with a particular preference for berries and mangos. They nest inside tree hollows, and their courtship period occurs in February. During the courtship period, the female may shed feathers on her head, which gives her head a yellowish tone. The male's beak may also change color to white during this time.
