About Convolvulus sabatius Viv.

Convolvulus sabatius Viv. is a trailing perennial plant with woody stems. It grows to 20 cm (8 in) in height, with non-twining stems that range from decumbent to ascending in growth habit. Its leaves are slightly hairy, all with smooth, untoothed edges. The base of each leaf blade is slightly heart-shaped, and ranges from truncate to wedge-shaped in form. The open flowers are 2.5–5 cm (1–2 in) in diameter; the corolla is 15 to 22 millimeters long, and colored light blue to violet, or blue to pink, often with a lighter center. The Latin specific epithet sabatius references the Savona region of Italy. This species is frequently sold in cultivation under the scientific synonym Convolvulus mauritanicus. Although it is naturally a perennial, it is best grown as an annual in colder climates. It is well suited for growing in window boxes and containers, and prefers a sunny growing location with good drainage. Tip pruning encourages the plant to produce new growth and more flowers. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
