About Conus tessulatus Born, 1778
The shell of Conus tessulatus ranges in size from 22 mm to 82 mm. The shell has a rather flat top, a rather pointed spire, and rounded shoulders. The shell's base color is white, and it is covered with bands of red, chestnut, or orange squares and rectangles. The base of the shell is sometimes tinged with black. Among known cone snail species, Conus tessulatus may have the largest geographic range. It lives in habitats stretching from the east coast of Africa, across the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, to the west coast of Central America from Western Mexico to Costa Rica. It is also found off the coasts of Australia's Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia.
