About Conus spurius Gmelin, 1791

This species is a marine cone snail with the accepted scientific name Conus spurius Gmelin, 1791. The maximum recorded length of its shell is 80 millimeters. The shell base is white, and it is covered in revolving rows of spots plus irregular, cloud-like markings in shades of orange, chestnut, or chocolate brown. These markings often form interrupted bands across the shell. The base of the shell has distinct grooves. The spire of the shell features one broad sulcus. This marine species can be found in waters ranging from East Florida to Venezuela, and also occurs off the coast of the West Indies. The species lives at recorded depths from a minimum of 0 meters to a maximum of 64 meters.
