About Conger verreauxi Kaup, 1856
The southern conger, Conger verreauxi, is a species of conger in the family Congridae. It is found in the eastern Indian Ocean and south-western Pacific Ocean, including the waters around southern Australia and New Zealand. It inhabits broken rocky reef areas at depths down to 100 meters. This species can reach a maximum length of 2 meters and a maximum weight of 5 kilograms.
Conger verreauxi was formally described by Kaup in 1856. The species name honors Kaup's friend Julius "Jules" Verreaux (1807–1873), a botanist, ornithologist, and trader of natural history specimens, who collected the species' type specimen in Australia.
