About Commelina dianthifolia Redouté

Commelina dianthifolia, commonly called the birdbill dayflower, is a perennial herb. It is native to mountain regions of the southwestern United States, including Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas, as well as northern Mexico. This species has blue petals and green sepals. Its inflorescence takes the form of a scorpioid cyme, which is subtended by a boat-shaped spathe. The Keres people use an infusion made from this plant as a strengthener for patients weakened by tuberculosis. The Ramah Navajo prepare a cold simple or compound infusion from the plant, which they give to livestock as an aphrodisiac.
