About Colobometra perspinosa (Carpenter, 1881)

Colobometra perspinosa is a species of echinoderm, commonly called the black feather star. This species is widely distributed across the tropical waters of the central Indo-Pacific region. Black feather stars often cling to gorgonians, holding their arms open toward moving water to optimize nutrient capture. The species reaches a maximum diameter of 30 cm (12 in), and individuals have at most ten arms. Its body is most commonly black, but it can also be black and white; rare individuals may even have a brown-gold coloration.
