About Colobocentrotus atratus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Scientific name: Colobocentrotus atratus (Linnaeus, 1758). This sea urchin is deep maroon in color, with a shape like a domed limpet. It can reach the size of a softball, though it is typically much smaller. Its upper surface is a smooth mosaic made up of tiny polygonal plates, which are formed from modified spines. A ring of large, flattened modified spines fringes this upper mosaic. On its underside, there is an additional ring of smaller flattened spines, plus a large number of tube feet.
