About Collinsia torreyi A.Gray
Collinsia torreyi A.Gray is a species of flowering plant in the plantain family, commonly called Torrey's blue-eyed Mary. It is native to California and adjacent parts of Oregon and Nevada, where it grows in coniferous forests across several mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada. This species is an annual herb that produces a slender, reddish stem that reaches up to around 25 centimeters in height. Its inflorescence is a dense, glandular arrangement of flowers that grow from pedicels. The corolla is no longer than one centimeter, with two white or lavender-tinted upper lobes and three darker lavender to purple lower lobes. Four varieties of this species are recognized. Collinsia torreyi var. brevicarinata is found in the Sierra Nevada and San Gabriel Mountains of California. Collinsia torreyi var. latifolia occurs in northern California and southern Oregon. Collinsia torreyi var. torreyi is distributed across California and western Nevada. Collinsia torreyi var. wrightii, which has the synonym Collinsia wrightii, is restricted to California and western Nevada.
