About Colias lesbia (Fabricius, 1775)
Specimens of Colias lesbia collected from southern Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina differ so little from one another that they cannot be distinguished as separate forms. For males of this form, the base wing color is dark orange yellow, and it is not uncommon to find individuals with violet reflections. The black-brown distal wing margin does not have a sharp boundary along its proximal edge. Except for the reddish middle section of the forewing, the undersurface of the wings is bright yellow, and bears the typical markings common to the Colias genus. For females, the ground color of the upper wing surface is very variable: it may be orange yellow, yellow, yellowish, or white with grey dusting. Greenish-grey specimens can also occur.
