About Colias harfordii Edwards, 1877

Colias harfordii, commonly known as Harford's sulphur, is a species of butterfly that belongs to the Pieridae family. This butterfly is found in the coastal ranges and canyons of southern California, ranging from Kern County south to San Diego County. Its natural habitat is made up of open chaparral and woodland clearings. It has a wingspan that measures 44 to 51 millimeters, which equals 1.7 to 2.0 inches. Adult Harford's sulphur have two generations per year, and are active from February to May, then again from June to August. Adult individuals feed on flower nectar from thistles and mints. The larvae of this species feed on the leaves of Astragalus douglasii. The species overwinters in its larval stage.
