About Colias electo (Linnaeus, 1763)

Colias electo, commonly known as the African clouded yellow or lucerne butterfly, is a member of the butterfly family Pieridae. This species can be found in eastern and southern Africa, as well as in Arabia. It inhabits temperate and montane grasslands. Males have a wingspan ranging from 35 to 40 millimetres (1.4 to 1.6 inches), while females have a wingspan of 32 to 40 millimetres (1.3 to 1.6 inches). Adult Colias electo are active and on the wing year-round, with peak activity occurring between April and August. The larvae of this species feed on Medicago sativa, Trifolium, Vicia, and Robinia pseudoacacia.
