About Coleataenia anceps (Michx.) Soreng
Coleataenia anceps (Michx.) Soreng is a rhizomatous perennial grass. Its stems can reach up to 1.3 meters in height, and it bears erect leaf blades that grow up to half a meter long. Its inflorescence is a panicle up to 40 centimeters long, which holds pale green or yellowish spikelets. This grass produces a large amount of seed; the seeds are curved like a bird's beak, which gives the plant its common name.
In the wild, this species grows in moist areas, including swampland and wet woodland habitats. It provides good forage for cattle and horses through most of the year, but it cannot tolerate overgrazing. Deer also graze on this plant, and its seeds serve as food for birds. It is also used for revegetation of disturbed land, such as mine spoils and roadsides. It grows best in moist to wet soils.
