About Coenobita purpureus Stimpson, 1858

Coenobita purpureus Stimpson, 1858, commonly called the Okinawan blueberry hermit crab or blueberry hermit crab, is a species of land hermit crab belonging to the family Coenobitidae. These hermit crabs are usually blue or purple in color, with white eyestalks, one pair of red antennae and one pair of brown antennae. Like other hermit crabs, they occupy gastropod shells for protection. This species is endemic to Japan, where it only inhabits the coasts of Japan's mainland, oceanic islands, and continental islands. It has a very narrow native range, restricted to this part of the northwestern Pacific. In the summer, Coenobita purpureus release their larvae, which then disperse to the Ogasawara Islands.
