About Coelostathma discopunctana Clemens, 1860
Coelostathma discopunctana, commonly called the batman moth, has a wingspan of 11 to 15 millimeters. When at rest, this moth holds its forewings tucked behind its hindwings, giving its body a flattened, rounded-triangular shape. Its overall body and wing coloration is light tan, and it often has a darker patch along the lowermost margins of its forewings. A single black dot sits on each forewing, located just above this darker patch. It can easily be mistaken for the very similar-looking species Sparganothoides lentiginosana. This moth is widely distributed across the eastern half of the United States and Canada, and its range extends further south into Mexico and the Caribbean. The larvae of Coelostathma discopunctana feed on clover plants that belong to the genus Trifolium.
