About Coeloplana meteoris Thiel, 1968
Like other members of the platyctenid group, Coeloplana meteoris has a flattened underside and two tentacles that emerge from tentacle sheathes located on its aboral side. These tentacle sheathes are more prominent in this species than in other platyctenid species, which gives the species its distinct recognizable shape. The three-dimensional form of its body is unusual among platyctenes. In terms of ecology, this comb jelly lives freely on soft sediment, which differs from other benthic ctenophores that are typically parasitic. Like most platyctenids, Coeloplana meteoris is hermaphroditic, and it is also capable of asexual reproduction through body fission and regeneration.
